Indian captain Rohit Sharma revealed the feeling after winning the T20 World Cup 2024. In his typical style, Rohit said ‘jaan mein jaan aayi’ which means he got his life back the moment India won the T20 World Cup final against South Africa in Barbados on June 29. An array of emotions unfurled on the field when Hardik Pandya defended 16 runs in the last over. Against South Africa. An emotional Rohit laid flat on the ground as his teammates surrounded him to celebrate. An emotional Rohit also lifted Hardik Pandya while he was giving an interview.
“Our main aim was to win the World Cup. Once we won the World Cup, it felt like I got my life back once again. I am in front of you now, opening this new academy. I can guarantee that the next Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jasprit Bumrah will come out of here only,” Rohit said during the launch event of a cricket academy in Kajarat.
India’s 11-year-long wait for an ICC title ended with a T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. Rohit has always openly showcased his eagerness to lift a World Cup for India. Under his captaincy, India suffered a loss in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final against England on November 10, followed by a heart-breaking loss in final of ODI World Cup 2023 against Australia on November 19.
However, despite all the setbacks, Rohit didn’t give up as he returned to the T20I side to lead India in another World Cup. India maintained an unbeaten win record throughout the tournament. They avenged the final loss against Australia with a 24-run win over them, where Rohit scored 92 to help India reach the semi-final. India also had their revenge against England as they beat the defending champions by 68 runs.
They were facing 1st time finalist South Africa in the summit clash and India managed 176 runs with Virat Kohli contributing with 59-ball 76. Despite some early blows, South Africa needed just 30 runs in 30 balls to win their maiden World Cup title, and then India fought back. The Men in Blue pulled off one of the greatest heists in the history of the tournament.
This was also Rohit Sharma’s last T20I as him and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the format.
